Poeticas Bluez
Shannon Upperman, also known as POETICA or just POE, has been writing since she was 12-years-old. She originally started out writing about her depression, but a chance encounter with a homeless man in Washington, DC compelled her to document the plight of mankind and the three things that all people — regardless of age, gender, class, ethnicity and religion — experience: love, suffering, and the perseverance to overcome. Through her Spirituality is she able to paint pictures of the triumph of the human Spirit. She is a prime example that no one is perfect but that, through Love, anything is possible. “When things are at their bleakest,” she says, “stand still and watch the Salvation of God.” She’s always known that her writing was a gift, but it wasn’t until within the past ten years that she realized it was a calling. And while she doesn’t consider her Self to be an oracle, the message, at times, is resoundingly prophetic. Listen to the Voice, and you, too, will hear!
Inspiration Behind “Kisses And Band-aids”
“When I wrote ‘Kisses and Band-aids’, I had just come back from a doctor’s appointment where they had to draw some blood. Once the venipuncture was complete and the blood had been collected, the phlebotomist offered me the choice of a band-aid or an ACE bandage. I chose the ACE bandage, of course, but the band-aid reminded me of my childhood. As a child, I was… rowdy, and because of this, I often came home scraped, scratched and bloodied. What would my mother do? Well, I’d hold the injury up to her face so she could inspect it, and then she’d ask, ‘Do you want me to kiss it and make it feel better?’ Enthusiastically, I’d nod and say, ‘Yes, ma’am!’ So, she did. And after she kissed it, she’d put a band-aid over it. And there was just something magical about the combination of kisses and band-aids. Immediately, I felt better! I was healed! And each time, I knew I would feel better if Mama would just kiss the spot and cover it with a band-aid. But then I learned a very valuable lesson.”
A deeper symbolism of this is our faith in God’s ability to heal. But we must have FAITH… even if it’s the size of a mustard seed… because with faith, all things are possible (Mark 9:23), but without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). What happens when we lose faith?
