Words Of Shelter: Waiting for the Light by Art Heifetz

Waiting for the Light

Her swollen legs swung wide

To support her considerable girth,

She sits on an overturned plastic crate,

Holding a cardboard sign which reads,

Please help,

Don’t drink. No drugs,

Two daughters,

Lost my job and home.

Her Redwing shoes implanted

In the concrete median,

She has sprung up overnight,

With her crate and sign

And steaming mug of coffee,

Reporting punctually to work

At 8 A.M.,

Her steady gaze fixed

On the oncoming cars

With an air of expectation

Mixed with revery.

Her story escapes us.

She is a raw statistic

In the Sunday paper we discarded.

She is a traffic accident that

We approach with averted eyes,

Checking the car windows

To make sure they’re locked,

Staring hard at the light.

One potato, two potato, three potato, four

It changes and we’re free.
